Dual Letter Form Sculpture

Background & Inspiration

I'm drawn to objects that do more than one thing, forms that are both functional and beautiful. An X-beam, for example, supports a structure, shapes a stair, and creates visual tension.

The brief was to fabricate a letterform. I chose “M,” but wanted to move beyond a flat interpretation, exploring dimensionality, movement, and perspective.

Concept Development & Outcome

Early sketches explored a slinky-like form moving through space to create an M, but it felt more conceptual than fabricable. Working hands-on with cardboard, bending and twisting simple strips, led to an unexpected discovery: the letter "A," the first initial of my last name.

This outcome aligned perfectly with my design philosophy, creating forms that serve multiple functions and interpretations.

The final piece is a continuous sculptural form rooted in typography, architecture, and motion. From one view, it reads as an M; from another, an A; from above, an elegant abstract. It begins in one place, transforms through space, and lands in another, yet remains grounded. A unified form in motion.
